Youtubers: Slackers or Entertainers?

What constitutes a “real job”? Does it involve having to attend a physical office building everyday from 9 to 5? Is it measured from time spent behind cubicles with eyes glued to Microsoft Excel? In this day and age, nobody gets to dictate the validity of an occupation considering the rise of unconventional jobs that if you told 5-year-old-me you could make money off singing in front of a camera, I wouldn’t buy it. Youtubers may come in all shapes and sizes, but they’re gathered towards the same goal; to entertain their audience. Carrying the weight of having to constantly produce decent quality content on the web takes extra ingenuity, as you’re effectively competing against millions of fellow creators who all want to dethrone you, makes Youtube ridiculously harder to maintain compared with “real” jobs with real contracts and a fixed income. As somebody who has dipped in and out of the entertainment industry, I would deem Youtubers worthy of being members of the said i...

Now, in the digital era where social media is reigning high, it seems that Youtubers and Selebgrams have taken over the public sphere. Following the success of social media platforms in placing influencer, KOLs, and public figures on a pedestal within the digital sphere where anyone can virtually find anything that suits their interests, Youtubers have gained enough power, influence, and fame to be regarded in the same ranks as A-list celebrities. They are even making enough to meet celebrities’ net worth by earning millions from views, likes, advertising and endorsements made on the video sharing platform. At a gla...

YouTube: Career or Vogue?

Founded in 2005, YouTube has grown to become the second most popular social media platform today. There are other video sharing platforms. Some are paid such as Netflix and Amazon Prime and some are free just like YouTube. But how did YouTube become so popular that 1.9 billion users watch YouTube monthly and 400 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every hour? YouTube has been popular for many different reasons over the years. Some of the examples are funny cat or dog videos and some of the examples are music videos like Baby by Justin Bieber. However, all those videos are usually uploaded to other video sharing platforms but only YouTube has sustained its growth and the userbase. The reason behind this is because of the communities formed by various YouTube channels. The influencers that run such YouTube channels are responsible for the immense growth of YouTube as a social media platform.  Anybody can upload videos that they can utilize to build a connection with users on Y...

Can brands benefit much from KOL Marketing? Can it be helpful and effective?

Image
The vast rising number of “influencers” is called by many as a booming phenomenon. These influencers are a part of KOL or Key Opinion Leaders. Meaning someone who has a significant power to persuade a targeted audience because of their trusted opinion in a certain field. However, this concept is not entirely new. Pharmaceutical companies have implemented KOL way before the age of influencers with doctors & experts in health in accordance with their credibility. Opinion leaders is a broader term that extends to experts in science, athletes in sports, and commentators in an industry. Whether it is the typical social media influencers or experts, a question on the effectiveness of KOL for marketing brands is often brought up. With a key characteristic of influencers which is promoting a brand or service through social media - whether it is endorsed or non-endorsed review, it has definitely changed the dynamics of digital marketing and how people are being persuaded. According...

KOL: People Influence People

With the arrival of new methods and strategies in the world of online marketing, we’ve also seen brand new definitions and terminologies appear. Such as KOL, apparently. But who are they actually? How do they work in the world of online marketing? What kind of KOL are needed in this era of disruption? And most importantly, is it useful? KOL is an acronym for Key Opinion Leader and can be defined as someone who’s considered a connoisseur of a certain topic and whose opinions are respected by their public, because of the reputation they’ve built for themselves. For that reason, KOLs have gained the status of experts and are recognised as referential people within their fields. Their achievements and skills are well-known, giving them an aura of authority. These profiles can be very valuable for carrying out marketing actions, since they’ve already gained respect from their community and their opinions are always going to attract attention and be credible. These ...

Tell Me What I Want: A Look at KOLs

Now if you’ve been following my content for a while, you’ll know that I always have trouble with task organization, but thanks to the life-changing help of--- I’m kidding. But you get the point. Most days, you can’t go on the average Instagram explore page without tripping over a public figure telling you what brand shoes they use on their morning jog, or an actor swearing up and down about the effects of the supplements they take, or maybe even a vaguely familiar face next to a blue check mark that might be someone you knew in middle school, praising a weirdly specific app to high heaven.  The basic idea of KOLs and influencers is pretty simple; whether it’s this season’s latest streetwear or how to cultivate bonsai trees, any topic will have its experts, people who can talk the talk and walk the walk, they’re respected, or at least listened to. Give them some communication skills, and once they get a platform and a decent audience, you’ve got yourself so...

KOL: Should Brands Join The Bandwagon?

"Modern problems call for modern solutions,” Given social media’s rising prominence in our society, brands and marketers go head-to-head on the battlefield that’s the internet. Revenues are counted not only in currencies; but also in engagement rates. Billboards have shrunk into the palm of our hands. Eyes are glued as we are scrolling through Miley Cyrus’ feed hoping to find a glimpse of her fitness secrets—hold on, detox slimming tea? That should be it. Okay, add to cart. That doesn’t always happen, indeed—but as far as effectiveness is concerned, it’s natural for humans to feel some sense of belonging and entitlement towards anything that crosses their sight. Especially when they’re worn by celebrities they’ve sworn to dedicate their lives to. Hence, chances are those likes and retweets will eventually end up in a sales boost. As for its usefulness, it falls under your responsibility at the end of the day, such as whether or not you have fully utilised your K...

That One KOL

My earliest memory of my childhood was wishing that I'd grow up and be as beautiful as my mother. Now that I've aged, I noticed that people have the tendency to look up to someone. I know guys who grew up wanting to be as tough as their fathers or even older brothers. In my case, since I do not have any siblings, I went through various phases in my life. My favorites would be emo and K-Pop; Avril Lavigne was my ultimate role model. I had the exact same haircut as she did back in the days and try to dress precisely like her. There were even times when my mom had to stop me from going to school with black eyeliners and other times where I got punished for having black nail polish on at school days. Surprise, I was only in elementary school then. Later on, as I entered junior high, I was diagnosed positive on Korean Fever. I had posters of my favorite girl band Girls' Generation as my room's wallpaper, I convinced my friends to perform a dance cover in front o...
