YouTube: Career or Vogue?

Founded in 2005, YouTube has grown to become the second most popular social media platform today. There are other video sharing platforms. Some are paid such as Netflix and Amazon Prime and some are free just like YouTube. But how did YouTube become so popular that 1.9 billion users watch YouTube monthly and 400 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every hour? YouTube has been popular for many different reasons over the years. Some of the examples are funny cat or dog videos and some of the examples are music videos like Baby by Justin Bieber. However, all those videos are usually uploaded to other video sharing platforms but only YouTube has sustained its growth and the userbase. The reason behind this is because of the communities formed by various YouTube channels. The influencers that run such YouTube channels are responsible for the immense growth of YouTube as a social media platform.
Anybody can upload videos that they can utilize to build a connection with users on YouTube and make a living out of it. Without YouTubers, YouTube would not have become the YouTube that we know now. Running a YouTube channel can be financially awarding as they can get paid based on the number of views and the number of ads played. Although, one ad alone does not get them that much money (around 0.005 dollars) when it accumulates with millions of views, the profit can be huge. According to a research, the most wanted job by kids is YouTuber.  But the question is, is it possible to make a living out of YouTube alone? Can being a YouTuber be a career? Well, there are many ways that we can analyze it with. First, there are social media influencers that have gained popularity from YouTube and became a celebrity. The prime example can be Justin Bieber. His mom started uploading videos of him singing and dancing, which went viral and caught many producers’ attention and along with that came his fame and popularity. Aside from the celebrities, there are also thousands of YouTubers all over the world with more than million subscribers and make way more than normal company employers would make a year. YouTube is not only the best way to connect with the fans and viewers regularly but also can be used to maximize their output on other social media platforms. For instance, selling merchandise can be the extra source of income that comes with being a YouTuber.
Running a YouTube channel is like a running a personal online business on online market places. You wouldn’t argue whether running an online store on Tokopedia is a real career or not. Basically, making money on YouTube is the same thing. You are basically selling your creative content to your viewers and getting endorsed by other companies to market their products to your viewers. In the end, more millennials would love to be youtubers because of the things famous youtubers are able to afford, but just like any other business, “it takes time and effort to become successful”.
