Indonesia's Waste Management
Recently, we have often
heard the news of the poor air quality of several cities in Indonesia. Little did they know,
besides the harmful air pollution in Indonesia, the contamination of plastic
waste in Indonesia is also getting worse. According to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesia is ranked second after China as a contributor to plastic waste thrown into the sea. According to statistics, there are about 3 tons of plastic waste that is thrown daily into the Indonesian sea. A truly disappointing fact to know, but that is the truth that is happening in our sea. Besides being bad for polluting the sea, plastic waste is also dangerous for the ecosystems in the sea, one of which is sea turtles. One type of plastic waste known as microplastics is hazardous for sea turtles. Because it will slowly kill turtles with nano plastics into the brain that can kill turtles slowly. How tragic, right?
There are many ways to prevent plastic pollution from getting worse. Indonesia’s government should take action to make the regulation and policies on imported waste and scrapes, especially plastic. Indonesia should follow the example of other countries in making regulations about waste management, such as how Germany made their laws about it in 1972. Germany has succeeded to divert almost 57% of their waste.
But again, this waste problem is not only suffered by the government or Indonesian officials. Every person in Indonesia without exception must also take action so that our seas are kept clean without pollution. The significant results can begin with small steps such as starting to leave plastics, good plastic groceries, plastic straws, and other plastics. In Indonesia, in 2019, there are already many restaurants that prohibit the use of plastic, and it is a small step but will lead to significant results later. Nowadays, many sell other alternatives such as metal straws to replace plastic straws and environmentally friendly plastics made from cassava. Despite everything, we must have the awareness that the impact of plastic pollution may not felt at this time, but it can impact the next generation.
