Moving the capital city? is it necessary?

Should we really move the capital city?

There has been an emerging issue about the Government’s plan to move the capital city of Indonesia from Jakarta to East Kalimantan. Specifically, in between two regions, Kutai Kartanegara and Penajam Paser Utara. This relocation plan has been decided and announced to the public by President of Republic Indonesia, Joko Widodo itself. The reason behind this relocation as what the president said, is because of the given load from the economic matters of Indonesia to Java Island and Jakarta as the central Government, fundamental business place, and the central of economic are already heavy and complex enough, cited from Kompas.com. Based on what the President said, I personally think he has a right point that Jakarta is already overburden. There are also pros and cons about this plan whereas some people think it is the right choice, but some people think that this is such a waste of time and cost.

From my point of view, I am more toward to disagree about the proposed law to move the capital city. Because the initial plan is to move the capital city to Kalimantan, as we all know Kalimantan is one of the largest forests in Indonesia. If we move the city to Kalimantan, there will be deforestation and it will affect the living creature inside the forest. Even though the government said that they will not build the city in the forest area, I believe they will build new factories and the factories will pollute the river stream. So, it is fine to say the government solving the problem by creating another problem.

In my opinion, rather than spending billion rupiah for moving the capital city, for now I think it is better to allocating the fund to post-disaster area to help them rebuild the destroyed building and infrastructure. Palu, Sigi, and Donggala could be the example for this. It is been a year since the earthquake and tsunami happened, but the destroyed area has not been rebuilt. Palu bridge IV is one of them, it used to connect East Palu and West Palu and could be considered as the most important bridge since it connected the two districts. Even though the government has already made the plan to rebuild the bridge since June 2019, up until now the government of Palu have not started the reconstruction. At the liquefaction area, many people who used to live in that area are still staying at the evacuation center (posko pengungsian) said one of my friends that lives in Palu. The other example could be the deforestation at Kalimantan or Pekanbaru. Moreover, the government should stop the forest fire that happens annually. The funds also could be used to create some sort of machine to detect the fire spot so we could prevent the fire before it is started to spread out even wider and bigger.

In conclusion, for now the government should use the funds to improve infrastructure, create or buy new technologies, and clean the polluted river or sea. Even it’s been more than 50 years since the Central Government in Jakarta established, but up until now the polity is not 100% perfect yet and the development of infrastructure has not been evenly distributed. So, it is better to allocate the funds to improve the post-disaster area and improve the infrastructure.
