Brand Building in Twitter, Satire Way
If people look at several companies' Twitter accounts, there would be something that they would realize that these companies have in common. Looking at how they are engaging with their followers, the use of satire seems to be a move that many companies use now and is pretty much loved by the Twitter world.
Satire, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is known as a way of criticizing people in a humorous way. Some of the forms of satire that companies usually use are sarcasm and irony, and they use this to build their brand in a different way. One example of a company that is known for tweeting out sarcastic replies to people who criticize them is the infamous fast-food chain, Wendy's. The form of sarcasm they use is by being brutally honest (or in a more youngster language, spitting out facts) with their tweets. With what they are doing, it certainly has gained them more customers or just Twitter people following them as they enjoy reading their tweets.
Companies sure want their brand to stand out among others, and they continuously try to find ways to make it happen. The use of satire in building their brand can be seen as a fresh move, as it also gives a chance for some companies to break loose from the classic marketing that integrates politeness. Back then companies tend to play safe by just tweeting general pieces of information about themselves, but now, in order to gain more engagement with their followers, they actually reply questions that do not even have that much correlation to them, but that makes them even more interesting.
With Wendy's, they let their followers be the ones to decide what kind of content they pull out on their Twitter. The way they do it is by letting them ask questions or even opinions on a certain issue to them. What makes Wendy's likable is how they always have the wittiest answers that immediately hits the right core of the context. This can be seen from them replying to their competitors' tweets, taking chances on a certain issue, or just simply being funny in a different way.
The use of satire is good in some context, but one thing for sure is to make sure that the companies know their audience well. In some cases, companies like Wendy's can successfully do their sarcastic tweets because their audience is the type to be chill with the tweets. Other companies may have to watch out in order for them to end up becoming a failure. Some of their audiences may feel offended by their tweets, hence they still have to really make sure to use the right choice of words and using it based on the context. If they can succeed, numbers will increase too.
