Ideas for waste management in Jakarta

By producing 3.2 million tons of plastic waste in 2014, Indonesia is now one of the world’s largest plastic waste producers. Over 1.3 million tons of this plastic ends up in rivers and oceans with poor waste management strategies, making Indonesia the world’s second largest marine plastic polluter as well. However, the Indonesian government aims to have a 70% decrease of waste by 2025. Even if Indonesia has already partnered with foreign investors in order to use their developed waste management technologies, the lack of public awareness of waste management is crucial in solving this huge problem. There is a need for educational campaigns in order to influence the public behavior and knowledge towards waste management. There is a need to encourage the public to implement waste management routines and strategies at home such as recycling and decrease of plastic use. On the other hand, people who are already aware of this problem and interested in this topic should be more pro-active and influence others, not just sit in hope that the government passes legislation, that the neighbor will start recycling.

In the marketing world, plastic and other packaging materials play an important role. Extra boxes, layers and frills are shiny and visual, they catch the eye and add unnecessary cost to a product, but at the same time push consumers to make the purchase (lead to company’s profit). Anyways, companies should think out of the box and present customers with innovations that allow them to buy packaging-free products or at least reusable packaging. It will have a huge positive impact on the environment and the company can also profit from it by using it as their CSR activity. For instance, Starbucks encourages customers to reduce single-use plastic by offering refilling their cups. This activity increases the sales of Starbucks products (cups) which brings them profit, but at the same time it gives customers discount on coffee and reward them with a good feeling of being nice to the nature. There is also a huge opportunity for setting up zero-waste stores. It is a new way of shopping when consumers bring their own glasses, bowls, or bags and use them as a "package" while shopping products without any package. Great example is cosmetic brand Lush with its “naked packaging” products.

Another solution for plastic pollution could be implementing plastic bottles deposit schemes, as it was done in Norway (deposit for plastic bottles is refunded once people return their empty bottles to a machine). In addition, in Europe it is common that hypermarkets and other stores charge for the plastic bottles. It could be another way how to reduce the huge number of single-use plastic. Moreover, all restaurants should change plastic straws into metal, bamboo, or glass straws.

Indonesian economy is growing which gives companies a huge opportunity to be a good example for their customers and involve waste management in their everyday communication. Brand owners can become leaders of change. And I am pretty sure that if they will be consistent in delivering this message, it will bring them profit and positive attitude from customers. On top of that, they will have the power to encourage competitive companies and also firms from different sector to follow this “trend”.
